Catholic Astronomer Says "OK to Believe in Aliens"

By May 14, 2008

Follow me on:

From an article in the Vatican newspaper comes a statement from the Reverend Jose Gabriel Funes. This statement gives full approval for a Catholic to believe in aliens. Funes is the top astronomer at the Vatican, and he says that the great vastness of the universe certainly makes it possible that beings other than man may exist. This comes as no surprise, really, as other spokesmen for the Church have made similar statements before.

The main gist of the statement is that this "belief" does not constitute a contradiction with one's faith in God, or the Catholic Church doctrine. We can certainly take this a step further with no problem, and say that anyone who believes in God, can also possess this belief, and not be hypocritical. This has been a point of contention for many years among some Christians, who assert that since the Bible only mentions mankind as existing on planet Earth, it precludes the existence of life elsewhere.

Personally, I have not felt that contradiction, but it has often been discussed among Ufologists, UFO students, and skeptics. What do you think? Does a faith in God, and the Bible make it impossible for you to also believe in alien life? Is it a contradiction of your religious belief?

Realities are realities. Remember people were imprisioned for not believing the earth was at the center of the universe at one time. It really doesn’t matter what Religious doctrine says. I have to tell you I think a lot of religious doctrine comes from legends, myths and folklore handed down by word of mouth.

I see the knowledge of life throughout the universe, and an extraterrestrial presence on this planet, to be assets for a growing faith. Like I said before, it would be ludicrous to think we are the only ones after seeing just one photo from Hubble. Even then, all someone has to do is look at the night sky, and realize that every star is a sun. We create myths which tell us stories about our deepest truths. I often wonder what other stories are out there. To know that a God’s creative acts are ongoing throughout the universe, has greatly broadened my Christianity.

Let’s be frank when we discuss this topic and acknowledge the Vatican’s far reaching influence and power among the world AND our governments. The Vatican is on the cutting edge of information and get updates from many countries’ intelligence services, no question. So, the Vatican is already aware that life exists elsewhere and has known this for a long time (ever since Eisenhower’s meeting in the late 40′s/early 50′s which was preceeded by Truman’s involvement too). So, why the change in stated policy for the Vatican to now allow such beliefs and to incorporate them so that they don’t contradict their stated realities? Some might believe this is so that the upcoming alien “attack”, or other alien disclosure/contact plans, do not smack the Vatican in the face and cause them to lose power, following or credibility. I think they’ve been informed something is going down soon and this is their attempt to ensure the Vatican stays out in front.

Sound like a conspiracy, perhaps, but do the research (the honest research looking at more than just your pre-conceived viewpoints) and you may see that it isn’t as far fetched as it may sound at first.

(5) Steve says:

England’s Ministry of Defense’s recent disclosure of UFO information to the national archives, and the Pope’s statements, are not coincidental. Little research is needed beyond reading headlines. The Vatican’s credibility and/or “power” has already been lost with many Catholics. Regained credibility would have more to do with how the Pope handles the many child abuse cases – which, of course, is unrelated to the topic at hand. I didn’t know the Vatican has such a far-reaching political influence and intelligence gathering infrastructure. I guess faith, theology, and critical thinking have nothing to do with implicating life throughout the universe. But then, what do I know since my views are preconceived.

What is the source for the story about workmen renovating labyrinths, with skeletons, under the Vatican? Anyways, I thought the topic was whether the existence of UFOs or extraterrestrial life interfered with my faith in God? For me, the answer is definately no. I do not see extraterrestrial life and my beliefs as mutually exclusive.

Yes, I again apologize, but not for my apologia. The URLs were right, but http://www.catholic.org is being redesigned. What I was trying to refer to was the article “Unearthed Vatican City Necropolis Reveals Slice of Ancient Roman Life (2006),” by John Thavis. Perhaps Ray could cite the source, since he made the claim. But, just for the record, extraterrestrial life in the universe has been considered by Catholicism before the events of the past week. In “Jesus Christ: Fundamentals of Christology,” by Roch A. Kereszty, O.Cist, Appendix II is entitled “Christ and Possible Other Universes and Extraterrestrial Intelligent Beings.” The copyright for this book is 1991. This book was required reading while in seminary. As for Spacealien saying “I know this thing goona happen a year back” – what thing? I have no problem with the possibility of UFOs being around the Vatican. They’re around a lot of other places too, places both famous and obscure. What’s being implied?

I applaud the Catholic Church for taking this position. After all, the Bible talks about matters of faith and the condition on this planet. Alien life does not depend our beliefs to exsist. it would be like saying your family pet doesn’t exsist because it’s not in the bible! it’s a matter of common sense that surely a few of those millions of planets out there must have intelligent life. to think otherwise is simply foolish.

There is much evidence in the Bible that tells us God is an intelligent extra terrestrial. There is a great deal of evidence that existed between Neanderthal man and Cro-Magnon man that ranges from cave art to modern day DNA studies that prove that there is an extraterrestrial presence at work here on earth. There is evidence on this earth that shows us more then once God has destroyed earth’s civilizations. I think you had better consider the possibility of extraterrestrials or alien because you worship one, if you worship the God of the earth.

Its nice to see the Catholic Church release this statement. It has no bearing on my own beliefs however. I am a Catholic and have never felt the slightest twinge of guilt at my belief in God or Life elsewhere in the cosmos. Nor has my faith blinded me to the faults of the Church. Does this admission speak to knowledge of something pivotal in the near future affecting our world as we know it? I have no idea. I remain vigilant.

Whew. It’s okay to welcome the aliens should they land. The Church has finally acknowledged it isn’t in control of the world and universe, as it was. Humbling to be certain, but not unexpected.

Did we have a jump-start from ETs in mans early history? Maybe. Were we seeded from comets and meteorites on an Earth ripe with the right conditions for life, and developed over billions of years, which would make us ETs ourselves? Might be and what I believe to have happened.

Check out the Vatican astronomer, Brother Guy Consolmagno. Incredibly intelligent, not overly religious, and a genuinely inquisitive man who loves to explore the heavens (no pun). He even has an asteroid named after him due to his discovery of it. They nicknamed it ‘Little Guy.’

It is quite significant that the Roman Catholic church has permitted this article in its Vatican publication. Together with other government connected statements that are being published, it may be possible that we, the general public, are being prepared for the news that there are alien beings/societies that are in contact with us (that is certain individuals/authorities). If this is so, when this info is made public, it will cause a huge paradigm shift. Theology will have to find a way to accomodate it. Some people’s belief structures will be very threatened, others will adapt.

Billy, they do mention Aliens in the Bible.

The Nephilim are mentioned in the Bible as giants not of this world. Angels were most likely visitors as seen in some of the old artistry and the Bible goes on the mention the Planet “Wormwood” an exact depiction of the 12th planet. This planet has many names, Niburu ect… and is mentioned in almost every religion and culture on earth. Demons or reptilian creatures were thought to habit the planet.

(30) Gary says:

It really doesn’t matter what’s out there. Man spends so much time trying to prove himself knowing more than God and is continually changing his own beliefs through his discoveries in science, archaeology, etc. The bottom line remains the same. God created it all, all we know and will learn and will know. Creation is not changing because God never changes. Man just changes his knowledge as he learns more of what God created.

November 20, 2008 at 5:24 pm
(31) Gary says:

It is always interesting how man continues to learn and change his beliefs about the world & how it came about and then says “this is how it is!” One only needs to look back a couple of hundred or several hundred years and see this. The reality is God created everything and man just continues to learn more about that creation. For example, Darwins evolutionary theory is no longer intellectually defensible. Creation never changed and never will change because God created it all.

(33) duchess says:

Genesis 6:1 “And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,”

Genesis 6:2 “That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.”

The “sons of God” are angelic beings, or angels, and their offspring are called “the Nephilim”. These angelic beings, or angels saw the daughters of men were beautiful. These are the fallen angels of Jude 6, who followed Satan in his fall in the “world that was”, which is the first earth age. Jude 6 reads; “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.”

We see that it is these fallen angels that are already reserved undo judgment, and continuing to follow Satan’s, in their coming to earth, and intermixing or marring Adamic daughters. This may be strange to you, However, it is taught by Paul in the New Testament. Paul was warning Woman in I Corinthians 11:10; “For this cause ought the woman have power [a sign of authority] on her head, because of the angels.”

The protection, or power of authority Paul warned against was from the angels. Though many translate this covering to be “hair”, however, it should be veil. That veil is the “Holy Spirit”. Because in the latter days it is going to be just as it was in the days of Noah, and friend we are in the latter days. If both Jesus and Paul warned the Christians to be alert of this fact, we had better be alert of it.

Genesis 6:3 “And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.”

Think on that phrase; “man is flesh”. God has just shortened mans life span from the thousand years, to “an hundred and twenty years”.

Genesis 6:4 “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”

The giants are the Nephilim, or those offspring of the marriage between the fallen angels, and the daughters of men. Who could that be, you may ask? The progeny of any sexual relationship is children, or descendants. These children, or offspring from the angelic relationships were misfits. They were deformed giants.

So here we have a problem, for these offspring were not born innocent of woman, but their true parentage , came directly from the heavens. They “left their habitation, as we saw in Jude six, and began to seduce the daughters of men. We are told that there were no women in the world that was, that first earth age, for all souls existed as “sons of God”. They refused to come to earth as required in our Heavenly Father’s plan, through the womb of woman, but rather came and took the women as their wives.

God plan required all souls to come to earth to be born of woman, and as an innocent soul; These angels defiled God and took these earthly women as play things. So these fallen angels [the sons of God] came and produced a mixture of earthly man, and angelic being which was a monstrosity, to walk the earth. Why again did this take place?

Because Satan tried to destroy the womb of woman, and the perfect, pure blood line of man, that the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ would be born through. That Christ child would provide salvation for all souls, that would believe upon Him.

Genesis 6:5 “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

It was evil going on twenty four hours a day. Jesus referred to this time, when He was asked how it would be just prior to His return, in Matthew 24:37. It is going to be just like it was in Noah’s time, when our Lord returns. Because Satan and his angels will be cast out of heaven, and walking the earth. If you are living in a fairy tale land, and thinking of angels as some ghostly figures, my friend you will be deceived, for both you and they are made in the same image.

Revelation 12:7; “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,”

This war will come to a conclusion very shortly, and for Michael and his forces are far superior than Satan’s.

Revelation 12:8; “And prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven.”

Revelation 12:9; And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

Did you catch that? Satan and his band of angelic beings are going to visit us on earth, and we are told in Revelation 9:1 that this will be at the sounding of the fifth trumpet. Friend, we are in the last generation, and the fifth trumpet is sounded before the seventh trumpet, which is the coming of our Lord. We will see Satan presenting himself as the Antichrist. the counterfeit of the true Christ, Jesus Christ. If you are expecting to fly out of here in a rapture, then you don’t stand a prayer of a chance against the Antichrist’s deceptions coming upon the earth.

In Matthew 24:38, 39 Jesus told us; “For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

Jesus is telling us, this isn’t the Messiah that you will be worshipping. This is Satan and his bunch of misfits, and fallen angels that will deceived many, for all the people in the final generation will be deceived, except for God’s elect.

We can also read of these misfits in the first four verses of Jude. They are the “men ho crept in unawares, ordained to condemnation, and denying our Lord Jesus Christ”. It’s amazing how the only book that offers any hope and salvation against the world wide destruction that will fall upon our generation, is treated worse then a dime store novel, and thrown on the shelves of Christian homes. You would probably read the novel before the Word of God.

This book given us by God, pinpoints exactly what we are to face, as this earth age comes to a close in our generation.

Paul’s second warning came in II Corinthians 11:3-4, where Paul warns women that Satan and his false ministers will come and seduce you again, as the “serpent wholly seduced [beguiled] Eve”. Paul is telling the ladies that they had better get their head’s covered, with the vail of truth. We must understand that our generation is in the final days, and these things are going to be happening again and will catch the minds of most people asleep, and draw them into the Antichrist’s deception.

The deception of a false joy will leave you totally defenseless, as a scorpion sting, and all except “God’s elect”, those sealed in their minds with the knowledge of God’s Word, will be defenseless upon At Satan’s arrival on earth. This is spelled out in Revelation 9:3-4. When these fallen angels are walking on the earth, it will be the events of Noah’s time all over again.

The statement by Reverend Jose Gabriel Funesn that other intelligent life can exist in the universe is not a new thing. Check out the book “The End of the Present World and the mysteries of the Furture Life,” by French Priest, Charles Arminjon, first published in 1881, republished in English 2008 by Sophia Institute Press. He says science asks Catholics, how can we admit that the vast universe contains only inert spheres devolid of life, or animals or slaves unable toknow the hand that feeds them? “Could these countless worlds, intended to proclaim his glory, be merely lyres suspended in the void…” But he says reason and the brimming life on earth makes us conclude that “life and thought actuate all these spheres. What is man “amidst all these countless beings” and that (itty-bitty man) my words “is the center of all things?” Father Arminjon says in reply “The Church has defined nothing” on this subject, and “the field ( whether other intelligent life exists in the universe) remains open to all hypotheses pp.124-5-6) and all opinions.” He goes on to state that the general opinion of Doctors of the Catholic Church are is that it is reasonable to think that beings capable of praising and blessing God “fill all space…”

Religions in the past and present consentrated on supressing any truth other than what was found in the Bible. Religion teaches ingnorance on every possible level. Because of its narrow minded precepts it holds humanity back from developing new innovations that may benefit mankind. I say like the settlers of old we just build our ships and set off into space to see what is there. Along the way we colonize. Did God put all those empty planets there for no reason? Perhaps he left them there for us to ascend as humans to another level and develop enough to sustain our lifeform. (Just a theory) Anyways if we keep Breeding as the good Bible tells us to, we will need to leave this overcrowded polluted planet within the next 1000 years or less.
