Catholic Astronomer Says "OK to Believe in Aliens"
The main gist of the statement is that this "belief" does not constitute a contradiction with one's faith in God, or the Catholic Church doctrine. We can certainly take this a step further with no problem, and say that anyone who believes in God, can also possess this belief, and not be hypocritical. This has been a point of contention for many years among some Christians, who assert that since the Bible only mentions mankind as existing on planet Earth, it precludes the existence of life elsewhere.
Personally, I have not felt that contradiction, but it has often been discussed among Ufologists, UFO students, and skeptics. What do you think? Does a faith in God, and the Bible make it impossible for you to also believe in alien life? Is it a contradiction of your religious belief?

Realities are realities. Remember people were imprisioned for not believing the earth was at the center of the universe at one time. It really doesn’t matter what Religious doctrine says. I have to tell you I think a lot of religious doctrine comes from legends, myths and folklore handed down by word of mouth.
I see the knowledge of life throughout the universe, and an extraterrestrial presence on this planet, to be assets for a growing faith. Like I said before, it would be ludicrous to think we are the only ones after seeing just one photo from Hubble. Even then, all someone has to do is look at the night sky, and realize that every star is a sun. We create myths which tell us stories about our deepest truths. I often wonder what other stories are out there. To know that a God’s creative acts are ongoing throughout the universe, has greatly broadened my Christianity.
I forgot to add that I would believe the above statements with or without the Pope’s approval.
Let’s be frank when we discuss this topic and acknowledge the Vatican’s far reaching influence and power among the world AND our governments. The Vatican is on the cutting edge of information and get updates from many countries’ intelligence services, no question. So, the Vatican is already aware that life exists elsewhere and has known this for a long time (ever since Eisenhower’s meeting in the late 40’s/early 50’s which was preceeded by Truman’s involvement too). So, why the change in stated policy for the Vatican to now allow such beliefs and to incorporate them so that they don’t contradict their stated realities? Some might believe this is so that the upcoming alien “attack”, or other alien disclosure/contact plans, do not smack the Vatican in the face and cause them to lose power, following or credibility. I think they’ve been informed something is going down soon and this is their attempt to ensure the Vatican stays out in front.
Sound like a conspiracy, perhaps, but do the research (the honest research looking at more than just your pre-conceived viewpoints) and you may see that it isn’t as far fetched as it may sound at first.
England’s Ministry of Defense’s recent disclosure of UFO information to the national archives, and the Pope’s statements, are not coincidental. Little research is needed beyond reading headlines. The Vatican’s credibility and/or “power” has already been lost with many Catholics. Regained credibility would have more to do with how the Pope handles the many child abuse cases – which, of course, is unrelated to the topic at hand. I didn’t know the Vatican has such a far-reaching political influence and intelligence gathering infrastructure. I guess faith, theology, and critical thinking have nothing to do with implicating life throughout the universe. But then, what do I know since my views are preconceived.
I have to agree with erazer..I too had similar thoughts running through my mind..I also remember some years ago when workmen were renovating some labrynths beneath the Vatican..they unhearthed 3 small skeletons with large heads & eye sockets..I remember seeing pictures of the skulls..Does the Vatican know what’s going on? Oh i think so…
I know this thing goona happen a year back when i read the article at http://www.ufoblogger.blogspot.com about how ufo visited Vatican in 2005 at the death of pope.
In recently ufo activity get really high ..
Now to get our govewrmnt to admit the same thing.
What is the source for the story about workmen renovating labyrinths, with skeletons, under the Vatican? Anyways, I thought the topic was whether the existence of UFOs or extraterrestrial life interfered with my faith in God? For me, the answer is definately no. I do not see extraterrestrial life and my beliefs as mutually exclusive.
http://www.catholic.org/international_story.php?id=21571 Is this what was being referred to?
Sorry, website change.
http://www.catholic.org/international/international_story.php.?id=21571
The right address helps.
Yes, I again apologize, but not for my apologia. The URLs were right, but http://www.catholic.org is being redesigned. What I was trying to refer to was the article “Unearthed Vatican City Necropolis Reveals Slice of Ancient Roman Life (2006),” by John Thavis. Perhaps Ray could cite the source, since he made the claim. But, just for the record, extraterrestrial life in the universe has been considered by Catholicism before the events of the past week. In “Jesus Christ: Fundamentals of Christology,” by Roch A. Kereszty, O.Cist, Appendix II is entitled “Christ and Possible Other Universes and Extraterrestrial Intelligent Beings.” The copyright for this book is 1991. This book was required reading while in seminary. As for Spacealien saying “I know this thing goona happen a year back” – what thing? I have no problem with the possibility of UFOs being around the Vatican. They’re around a lot of other places too, places both famous and obscure. What’s being implied?
unfortunately Steve this was something that caught my eyes quite a while a ago and i have no way of remembering where i saw it…For all i know it is quite possibly a fake..What i was actually implying was the fact that the powers that be.. including the vatican..quite probably have a better understanding of the ufo scenario than most people might realize..
Well yars ago at mass our 70yr old priest gave a sermon on the Ghost he witnessed go through a wall in a place where a man had hung himself. In April 2008, my husband and myself saw several Ufos. Something IS out there. Glad The Vatican will now let me off the hook for THAT but still refuses to honor my marriage to my husband.
I applaud the Catholic Church for taking this position. After all, the Bible talks about matters of faith and the condition on this planet. Alien life does not depend our beliefs to exsist. it would be like saying your family pet doesn’t exsist because it’s not in the bible! it’s a matter of common sense that surely a few of those millions of planets out there must have intelligent life. to think otherwise is simply foolish.
Faith has nothing to do with it,God Is God. Hopefully the existence of extraterrestial life will enlighten us more on the meaning of life.
Gee, I’m so glad we have the catholic church’s approval! All I can say is oy vey
There is much evidence in the Bible that tells us God is an intelligent extra terrestrial. There is a great deal of evidence that existed between Neanderthal man and Cro-Magnon man that ranges from cave art to modern day DNA studies that prove that there is an extraterrestrial presence at work here on earth. There is evidence on this earth that shows us more then once God has destroyed earth’s civilizations. I think you had better consider the possibility of extraterrestrials or alien because you worship one, if you worship the God of the earth.
Its nice to see the Catholic Church release this statement. It has no bearing on my own beliefs however. I am a Catholic and have never felt the slightest twinge of guilt at my belief in God or Life elsewhere in the cosmos. Nor has my faith blinded me to the faults of the Church. Does this admission speak to knowledge of something pivotal in the near future affecting our world as we know it? I have no idea. I remain vigilant.
E. Lee Gregory is on to something. Pay much attention to his hypothesis and study what he is saying and you will stumble upon the truth. You all make valid points. I am proud you.
Eternal love for you and all of mankind, Genesis
Whew. It’s okay to welcome the aliens should they land. The Church has finally acknowledged it isn’t in control of the world and universe, as it was. Humbling to be certain, but not unexpected.
Did we have a jump-start from ETs in mans early history? Maybe. Were we seeded from comets and meteorites on an Earth ripe with the right conditions for life, and developed over billions of years, which would make us ETs ourselves? Might be and what I believe to have happened.
Check out the Vatican astronomer, Brother Guy Consolmagno. Incredibly intelligent, not overly religious, and a genuinely inquisitive man who loves to explore the heavens (no pun). He even has an asteroid named after him due to his discovery of it. They nicknamed it ‘Little Guy.’
“In the beginning God created the heavens and earth…’
Glad to see folks of the HOLY, understand COSMIC BIOLOGY.
You have all looked at the scientific evidence into UFO”S, Now you should look into the Christian evidence into UFO”S, This is clearly Satans deception and your falling into his trap. Deception will florish in the the end days fooling even the elect the Bible states. I will soon post information you can obtain proving this, I urge you to look at both sides of this argument!
E Lee Gregory, Unfortunatley you already caught the attention of someone with your dangrerous train of thought,I do Not worship an alien and God is NOT an alien. “PROFESSESING themselves to be wise, they became fools… Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped a creature more than the Creator…” _Romans 1:22,25 You are opening yourself to demonic activity in ways you can’t imagine. Please check out this Web site http://www.rense.com/general32/expose.htm or Google search: UFO’S Demonic Deception or contact the Berean call at 1-800-937-6638 ask for movie: UFO’S The Hidden Truth, Item # VT018 The cost is only $5.00 You may also want to look into item # VT028 I pray you put your trust in the God of the Bible and your faith in Jesus Christ not the Church Hierarchy. “Let God be true and every man a liar” God Bless
Of course it’s OK to believe in ET’s, after all what do you think GOD really is?
It is quite significant that the Roman Catholic church has permitted this article in its Vatican publication. Together with other government connected statements that are being published, it may be possible that we, the general public, are being prepared for the news that there are alien beings/societies that are in contact with us (that is certain individuals/authorities). If this is so, when this info is made public, it will cause a huge paradigm shift. Theology will have to find a way to accomodate it. Some people’s belief structures will be very threatened, others will adapt.
Billy, they do mention Aliens in the Bible.
The Nephilim are mentioned in the Bible as giants not of this world. Angels were most likely visitors as seen in some of the old artistry and the Bible goes on the mention the Planet “Wormwood” an exact depiction of the 12th planet. This planet has many names, Niburu ect… and is mentioned in almost every religion and culture on earth. Demons or reptilian creatures were thought to habit the planet.
It really doesn’t matter what’s out there. Man spends so much time trying to prove himself knowing more than God and is continually changing his own beliefs through his discoveries in science, archaeology, etc. The bottom line remains the same. God created it all, all we know and will learn and will know. Creation is not changing because God never changes. Man just changes his knowledge as he learns more of what God created.
It is always interesting how man continues to learn and change his beliefs about the world & how it came about and then says “this is how it is!” One only needs to look back a couple of hundred or several hundred years and see this. The reality is God created everything and man just continues to learn more about that creation. For example, Darwins evolutionary theory is no longer intellectually defensible. Creation never changed and never will change because God created it all.
knock and the door will open, seek and you will find. Do these words sound familiar? Maybe theres something more to this than meets the eye, or is our minds eye playing tricks on us?
