MUFON's Findings on Texas Sightings

Wednesday May 21, 2008
On Sunday, May 18, Texas MUFON director Ken Cherry, along with MUFON chief investigator Steve Hudgeons, delivered the results of their investigation into the wave of UFO sightings over Texas.

The results are lackluster, yet understandable. There was not enough tangible evidence to claim that there was an extraterrestrial invasion in the lone star state, yet there was no evidence of a hoax, or a way to explain the sighting away as a conventional object. In other words, there is no clear cut conclusion.

Cherry stated: "All the video that we've analyzed hasn't provided substantial proof, without definite evidence, we're left with the word of our witnesses."

There were around 200 reports from witnesses, and trying to separate the wheat from the chaff is a formidable task, especially in cases like these that are highly publicized. All eyes look to the skies, and many reports, photos, and video are of unrelated events, which further confuse the matter.

The investigators said that many of the sightings reported could be easily explained by everyday, mundane events, although intentions were good. Much of the video was just not of good enough quality to have probative value.

So, another one bites the dust, unless more evidence comes forward, which is unlikely. The sensational reports from Texas will remain a mystery... at least for the time being.

most of the sightings fall into this class as ‘not enough evidence’ and that’s good in a way. I’d rather have them be responsible and say “we don’t know” or “not enough evidence, but possible”. But I still would like to see a list of the most reliable sightings and maybe the best pics in these sightings. Pics can be faked these days so are somewhat unreliable unless you have more than one responsible person witness the ufo. I believe there was a police officer who wsa a good witness in the texas sightings. In the best incidents there are many people observing the incident and there are some decent pics taken. I’d like to see better pics and videos also, but I still want to have a few realiable eyewitnesses (pilots, police officers, scientists, air traffic controllers- people who are going to be more objective and less likely to say everything is a UFO). There’s -probably less than 50 or so incidents that are truely incredible. Bentwater, Roswell, Phoenix lights come to mind as fitting this category. There are others of course.

To me, it is unfortunate that the event at Stephenville, Texas had to degenerate from the testimony of credible witnesses (e.g., the pilot Steve Allen - not the comedian)to a media circus of silkscreened t-shirts and tin foil hats. I thought that the original story, told by an experienced pilot, along with the hedging of the military’s statements, had a lot of merit.

I think the top few sightings would be interesting and should be separated from all the other nonsense. I’d like to see them listed separately from the shaft. One of the problems with UFO sightings has been too many garbage and wierd opinions that water down the actual event as witnessed by the best observers. There was a decent report by a police officer and a few others.

When I saw the headline “MUFON’s Findings on Texas Sightings”, I knew what they would say because how could they determine what had really happened in such a short amount of time? This case could take years if a thorough investigation were done. For example, have they really had enough time to investigate the credibility of over 200 witnesses? Who is MUFON trying to kid by pretending that they could have a conclusion in such a short amount of time anyway? They already know but won’t tell us “peon”.

TEXAS SIGHTINGS - Was this not the issue where some people saw UFO’s about a mile or so in length…and the only return comment from the government is:
“not enough evidence” ??
Anything in the sky, other than a cumulo nimbus, that is a mile long, is quite a bit of evidence. That’s bigger than the largest aircraft carrier. Bigger than the “Queen Mary”. Heck… that’s probably bigger than the “Hail Mary”. What do they want up there, Mount Rushmore?

To L. Roly - thanks for making me laugh! MT. Rushmore probably wouldn’t be large enough either. I didn’t hold out any hopes that there would be any real answer either way concerning these sightings. Oh well…..

I feel like MUFON did the best they could with the evidence they had. It is also my feeling that, as with any UFO sighting wave, there were probably one or a few genuine UFO sightings and a bunch of misidentifications (albeit from well-intentioned people).

I agree that the lack of a clear conclusion is good in a way. It means that at least some of the accounts of the sightings could not be explained by anything known to the witnesses or investigators.

It always peeves me when someone starts exploiting and commercializing the UFO/alien phenomenon. Roswell is the prime example of this, and IMHO this exploitation has caused some potentially open-minded people to dismiss the whole thing as just an effort to draw in tourist dollars.

Whether or not any UFOs are extraterrestrial in origin, there is a phenomenon of some kind here that deserves serious study rather than trivialization.

(10) Patrick Sullivan says:

There is a lot of nuclear war fighting equipment in the area of the Texas sightings. Get it yet?

If former Presidential adviser James Carville were trying to explain why UFOs are buzzing near military areas he might say something like this: “IT’s the Nuclear weapons Stupid.”

Our nuclear war fighting elite are still hell bent for leather upon using these weapons of mass destruction upon us.

Seems like MUFON has learned better to be more “skeptical” after the Gulf Breeze fiasco. . .

(12) Stewie Griffin says:

Patrick….Um I live in Texas and no…sorry to say there “isn’t” a lot of nuclear war fighting equipment just floating around here scattered across the Texas plains. We don’t go and hang out at the local nuke bomb hangars pub and discuss who we’re going to blow up next. Afterall, isn’t there a shelf life on that plutonium?

what sort of camera is good enough to be believed if we have the opportunity to photograph a ufo?
