NASA's Phoenix Lander Lands on Mars

Wednesday May 28, 2008
NASA's Phoenix Lander has made a safe, soft landing on the surface of Mars, coming down in the red planet's northern polar region. This part of the forbidden planet is especially important because the polar region is suspected of having a surface similar to Earth's poles, and should have ice beneath. This would, of course, prove that water, the building block of life, exists.

In a press conference after the successful landing, investigator Peter Smith stated: "This is a scientist's dream, right here on this landing site."

The Phoenix Lander's journey was a long one-10 months it took to traverse the 422 million miles. The lander will begin digging into the surface of Mars shortly, using its long arms to search for the illusive signs of life. There has already been some discussion on an unknown white object visible in one of the first photographs taken by the lander. I have had many messages about the object, but have no answer at this time.
