The Commercialization of Shag Harbor
After an identified object crashed into the icy Atlantic waters, a number of local fishermen rushed their boats into the ocean, thinking they would find a crashed plane, and possibly survivors. What they found was something entirely different-a trail of foamy, yellow water, and no visible wreckage of a plane, or any other object. The Royal Canadian Air Force soon was on the scene, and conducted a well documented investigation. Their documents actually proclaimed the object as a UFO, a rarity in UFO case files.
The small fishing village, at the time of the crash, was not even listed on some maps of the area, and the case changed that once and for all. Now, the area attracts many visitors who come for one reason-to see the place where the UFO hit the water. Various models of aliens adorn the village now, and many souvenirs are available. And only recently, the Shag Harbour Incident Museum and Research Centre was opened to the public. The enormous attraction of the village is well detailed in an Internet article, Nova Scotia Village Uses UFO Sighting to Lure Tourists. Check it out, and you will see what an event such as a UFO crash can do for a community.

Do I think that this kind of UFO commercialism cheapens the UFO mystery?
No I do not….and I see absolutely nothing wrong in Shag Harbour using its fame in the world of UFOlogy to attract visitors. It’s what Roswell has been doing for decades.
The fact that a place like Shag Harbour can make money for itself from its encounter with a UFO does not, in my view, cheapen the mystery and, in fact, it could be argued that by consciously using the incident to attract visitors to the area, it is actually keeping the whole UFO issue “real” and in the public domain where it needs to be.
Numerous places have “cashed in” on the UFO phenomenon over the years but it hasn’t diminished world-wide interest in the UFO phenomenon one litte bit.
If commercialisation of the UFO phenomenon was putting people off, interest in the phenomenon would have died out ages ago.
Good luck to Shag Harbour is what I say on the matter…
I just wish I was able to go and see the place for myself!!!
Mike, I agree. If a fishing village can make a little extra money for its community (as fishing bounties are diminishing, today) that’s fine. I agree that if it keeps the public interested in the UFO phenomenon; that’s good, too. It’s not cheapening the event, itself.
I wonder if locations notorious for UFO incidents, such as Sag Harbour, that use the incident as an economic opportunity to make money catch the eye of the governments (local and maybe even national) that have jurisdictions over these towns and cities? I mean, if governments (even if they’re just local)find inecentive in providing more information to the public because it brings tourists and dollars; maybe there would more more research centers or museums dedicated to UFO incidents? The potential to earn money can make any topic serious to officials! Along this line of thinking – perhaps the all-mighty-dollar would encourage physicists, astronomers, university science researchers, if not government officials, too, to get involved, if not provide more credability, cutting edge research, official records or reports, and support to UFO research? Such is the potential power of the dollar in a free market society…we’ll see.
I’ve seen three ufo’s at three seperate times. One was in the millitary me and another private. The most clear one that I seen was in Wilberforce , Ohio 5:00am. this one was a UFO passenger plane, I seen about 15 windows in my eye site.It was a saucer shape with a tail behind it with one red light, not blinking. I am an artist and I can draw what I seen. I was happy at first, but, then I got scared because I was by myself. It was close so that there was no doubt.
America was built on capitalism, so I don’t think there’s any problem with this Canadian village doing this. I’m sure some will be turned off by it if it does become too tawdry. There might be other places nearby that take advantage of that by offering a more elegant experience.
Good luck to those people from Shag harbour for making a few bob on there good fortune, as you have said this story has withstood the test of time and has a lot of credibility to it. Getting visitors into the comunity is a double edged sword, it keeps the subject in the public eye, but spare a thought for the habitants of Shag Harbour who do not want the publicity and invation of tourists thrust upon them !!
Daryl, where did you see the UFO passenger ship? Did you report it? Wow, soooo interesting. I, myself, have seen 3, possibly 4, UFO’s. All with other witnesses. One of the one’s I saw was a huge black triangle flying silently, very low, over my house and the house across the street. It had 3 yellow lights on the back edge. I saw it with my 15 yo daughter back in 1991. I’ll never forget it.
NO, I don’t think it cheapens the event at all. If any event is real, it will stand on it’s own reguardless if somebody is trying to make a buck off their “15 minutes of fame”. Do tourism and souveneer shops make the Gettysburg battlefield any less valid? I think not. They do it in Roswell and in Rachel, Nevada, so why not Shag Harbor!
Yes i think it does, Ufoligy does not need all this less important stuff, One should keep a open mind on any subject, Until i saw my one and only very close up ufo A huge Trangle, then you know its all real. if you would like my story plus UFO form which was filled in then please ask . if only to make people just stop and think. This subject is very real and we will never convince, until they see for themselves, But iam afraid you wont see them on tv, you have to go out and find them, you wont find them first or second time ??? But i swear to you they are here now, what and were they come from?? well this is the real question.?? Perhaps you could be the person to find out ??? ps If you do Please share it with the many like me who has seen these craft, and to this day i still say why me ??? GOOD LUCK

Not at all. In fact anything that keeps stories like this before a sceptical public is a plus in my opinion.
Dear friends:
I am writing on behalf of the members of the Shag Harbour Incident Society. Reading this web page I can see some people have the wrong idea on our society. We are a small 12 member non profit group,we do hope to have more members join in the future. We do not make money for ourselves. Our group is working towards setting up a new building close to the UFO site here. At present we are in a building owned by Dorothy Nickerson our vice chairman. She has given the use of her building until we have the funds raised to build a new one. All the money we raise goes into this account as well as what we need to hire a attendant. Last year we were lucky to hire a student through the student program. There is no admission for the centre. We do sell some keepsakes and the profit goes to cover things like insurance, other upkeep, and of course we have to pay for these keepsakes which can run into money. This past year we had expenses for the festival. We did receives some help for that which was great. It does cost quite alot to bring in top UFO speakers. Our Festival will be Aug. 7th and 8th this year. Our speakers inculde Don Ledger, Chris Styles, David Cvet and Stanton Friedman. We hope to get a good turnout for this. Also if anyone wishes to join our society just drop us a email at ShagHarbouratgmail.com. Thanks alot Shag Harbour Incident Society
