An Encounter in North Carolina

Monday November 10, 2008
Some of you may have watched a recent Discovery Channel show titled, "UFOs over Earth, " which detailed the MUFON organization's investigation into an enigmatic case of UFO sightings, alien encounters, and possible abduction.

The case occured in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in January, 2007, and involves the testimony of five men, four who saw UFOs, two who saw alien beings, and one who was abducted. The case also detailed regressive hypnosis, psychological tests, and polygraph examinations.

I have written about this case, and hope you take a look, and give some comments. Check it out at The Fayetteville, North Carolina, Encounter.

An interesting case. I’m never sure what to make of polygraph evidence, and here in the UK, they’re not considered reliable enough to be used in criminal cases. I guess the results are open to a number of interpretations. For instance, can a polygraph test, and its administrator, adequately distinguish between deceptiveness and nervousness on the part of the test subject? I suspect not. Also, it’s been known for good, confident liars to pass a polygraph. So I would be tempted to disregard the polygraph results in this instance.

Regressive hypnosis is also unreliable. It’s often hard to tell if a subject is recalling a suppressed memory, or is merely fantasising. The best way to assess this witness’s sincerity may be by digging a little into his background, to see if he has a motive for perpetrating a hoax. And even if he’s sincere in reporting what he believes happened to him, what he believes may not necessarily be what really happened. The whole abduction/missing time thing is an absolute minefield, isn’t it? This is definitely one of the more intriguing cases I’ve read recently - thanks for posting.

Like Stephenville Tx, Fayetteville, NC is just an unimportant bump in the road and no place to visit except that, like Stephenville TX, Fayetteville is located near a huge US Federal Reservation with a combined Army post and Air Force base where nuclear rounds and bombs are stored.

Personally, I believe that something is up and that we may shortly be dealing with our first ‘official’ contact by beings from another world far off across the sea of space.

With all of our Hollywood Hoopla and everybody wishing for contact, it would serve us well to remember that, even if our visitors from space are well meaning, they may well cause the destruction of our civilization anyway, just as we did to Native American tribes, the Eskimo and Alouette People and the indigenous peoples of Hawaii simply by overpowering them with advanced technology and a few diseases that they had no protection against.

Be very careful of what you wish for, Grasshoppers, because your wishes may be granted!

Concur this is an interesting case with similarities to the Pascagoula Mississippi case some years back, as well as the incident when forest workers cutting trees had a similar experience on their drive after work out of the forest back to town.

Re polygraph exams- they record galvanic skin response (sweat) pulse, blood pressure and breathing rate. They are at best subjective and used more to intimidate suspects than to determine falsehoods. Most applications are properly used for exculpatory purposes, i.e., to clear a suspect. But test results are uncertain at best and subject to change from one test to the next of the same subject, as well the subjective interpretation by the individual examiner. (This has been demonstrated repeatedly in covert evaluations of polygraph examiners, e.g., by merely suggesting to the examiner before hand that one subject of several to be tested is suspect of “theft.” The examiner will almost invariably conclude that that subject was in deed evasive and suspect in key responses, while other subjects were “clean”, when in fact none of the “subjects” had really done anything wrong in the first place.) Add to that the effects from variables like caffeine, lack of sleep, the effects of a variety of medications, and a variety of “techniques” that might employed by the subject being examined (e.g., curling toes tightly in shoes during questioning) can all impact the type and accuracy of test response and readings by the examiner, in turn.

The best- but still subjective- results come from an exam administered repeatedly, on different days, by the same examiner, preferably well trained and experieinced, and using the same questions, which the consistently well rested subject will have been informed of before hand, to include a detailed briefing on the test procedure and a “trial run” for familiarization to reduce anxiety.
