Blue Beam in Indianapolis, Indiana

By , About.com Guide   March 2, 2009

Follow me on:

The second week of January, 2009, a 19-year-old woman was exiting I-65 at I-465 in the northwest part of Indianapolis, when she saw something very unusual-the sky lighting up with a bright, blue beam reaching from the sky to the ground. Oddly, the woman states that she was not afraid, but felt a sense of calm while watching the odd display.

She is the third person to recently report this phenomena in the same area, and officials are in the dark as to what this is. She stated that the sky seemed to "flicker." This lasted about 5 full seconds.

Shortly thereafter, as she was talking to a friend of hers, the friend's mother came outside to report that the house lights were flickering on and off. All three reports have come through the MUFON network.

Any ideas on what this could be?

It is interesting for sure. But one thing puzzles me. Lights up the sky with a blue beam? That would get my attention for sure yet only 3 witnesses? I’m sure there were others that haven’t come forward but something like that I would think more than 3 would report it.

Let’s see:

Blue beam from sky to ground…
Sky flickered…
House lights went on and off…

Uhhh… Lightning?

Electrical storms are possible without rain. As we approach Spring these are more common.

Honestly when these kinds of stories are posted, at least provide some compelling evidence to rule out natural causes.

I have had several real good, amazing and unexplainable observations in my life of ufos, so im a believer. But it amazes me how many people report easily explained things as ufos, one check of MUFONS web site and there will be reported..stars planets moon satellites meteors space station space shuttle rocket launches aircraft ballons lanterns lightning and transformers blowing, tells ya how many people arent aware of the normal things, much less the abnormal. People should go outside a little more dont you think?

I would hope that people have seen enough lightning in their lives to know what is and is not. Or would they?

(9) maxim says:

maybe the beam was some advanced electromagnetic ray electromagnetic bombs effect on the stuff that work on electricity (shut them down, in this case make them go on and off)

(11) Herb says:

(Gee, this person isn’t me – she’s never seen lightning before, and probably is a moron.)

(Only 3 witnesses? I’d expect at least 10,000 detailed reports of a 5-second blue beam in the sky!)

(It’s the beginning of an invasion!)

(on and on blither ad nauseum)

EXACTLY why I don’t report things.

I think by the description she gives it gives the impression of lightning but it depends on how one perceives lightning. Obviously the officials were in the dark about it…does that mean there was no unusual weather in the area at the time. I would have liked to know more about the width of the beam.
A perfectly straight vertical column of light(or beam) did appear to me in my own room at night and moved slowly and intelligently around my room. Its a long time ago now but it was my true experience but I too was not afraid and felt calm. Experiencers are left with the memories but no proof to give or answers.

I agree with most of the posts here about people jumping to conclusions so quickly, but I also think I would rather it get reported anyway, just in case, so me and my U-F-OMANIACS! can make up our own minds, BROTHER! Sorry I just saw an old clip of Hulk Hogan, and something came over me. A healthy mixture of skeptic/curiosity/investigation is a step in the right direction, I think. As always great posts, thanks Billy, and happy sky watching.

Possibly a “Marking event,” giving us a clue to something that we should investigate.

(16) The Flying Fisherman says:

Lightening does not last 5 seconds. It does not even last a full second. I believe most people would know a light beam from lightening. What is it? I have read many reports of UFO’s at night shining spot lights down as if they are searching for something on the ground. Also Travis Walton was hit by a blue beam. So it certainly could be a UFO. Of course helicopters do the same thing but usually they make enough noise to be identified.

(18) fred edison says:

Could a laser or synced lasers produce such a beam in that blue color (filter)? Lasers tend to flicker a bit, from what I’ve seen on TV. The best I’ve seen were in the ‘UFOs Over Illinois’ or whatever that recreation was called where the cops and civilians saw that low flying object. (No, I don’t go to Pink Floyd laser light shows.) How did she know it was projected from the sky to ground as opposed to ground to sky? How could you tell?

If her house lights are flickering at times other than seeing the beam, she may want to have an electrician check the safety and loads of the wiring/breakers. Lights typically flicker when there’s a power drain on the electrical circuits. If it only happens in sync with this beam, could the power drain be external? I don’t know but the power company might.

I live on the north side of Indy and I didn’t see this, but I have seen something similar in the past. It was a meteor. It was a blue-ish green streak. Could this be what they saw?

(22) Greenwood, Indiana says:

Todays date is March 9, 2010. At about 8:30, my mother and I were driving home from Wal Mart, and we both saw this exact same phenomenon occur. The sky northwest of Indianapolis lit up light blue, briefly; and then proceeded to change to a greenish blue color, which lasted a few seconds before returning to normal. If anyone can shed any light on this situation, PLEASE DO!!!

I just witnessed this same light as the person above did. I was driving on 65 South close to where it connects with 465 on the south side of the city and I saw this turquoise/blueish light creep over the sky. It lit up a huge portion of the sky! I was immediately tuned in with a sense of awesome wonder. Wonder what this is?!

(24) Lamont DABNEY says:

i saw it also it was at red light sitting in my truck on 183 Cicero ave facing south towards Matteson IL. It appeared to come right out of the sky like a tear drop in a blue shimmering crystal beam straight down to the ground and sparkling all in about 5 seconds. I raced to try and catch the semi truck who was at the next traffic light ahead of me to ask him if he saw i couldn’t catch him before getting caught by another light.
