Press Secretary Fields UFO Question

By , About.com Guide   July 27, 2009

Follow me on:

Will the government release information on UFO files? Some enthusiasts have, since Obama became President, become quite hopeful. I am not that hopeful, yet it does seem that UFOs are at least being discussed among some of Obama's team.

On 07-24-09, White House Press Secretary Gibbs, during a C-SPAN interview was fielding questions via phone calls. One of the callers asked him about UFOs. Gibbs was very professional in his response.

See the video at "I Take Your Question Seriously," and let us know what you think about it.

(1) PhilB says:

Two past presidents have inquired about UFOs from the Top Secret Inteligence agency which deals with UFOs and alien contact and been stonewalled. Such clasified information is not available to civilian leaders and politicians.
If UFOs are not real – why is there a United Nations mandate to kill any captured aliens??
The goverment does not want to admit that UFOs are real – and that they have only very limited defenses against them, such as the land based space laser canon. To tell people that we have not been alone for thousands of years and defenseless against their superior technology would cause some poeople to panic and question organized religion.
Humans cannot accept that we are not the smartest organisim in the great pond. Or even accept that something appearing totally different from humans is superior to us.
Humanity and the earth is but one grain of sand on the biggest beach you can imagine….

(2) Mikhal says:

PhilB sounds like he’s been reading too much science fiction. I’d love to see proof of some of those claims. ‘land based space laser canon.’lol.

‘Humanity and the earth is but one grain of sand on the biggest beach you can imagine…’

I prefer to think of us a snowflake – just as special and unique as all the others. We’re different, but no less important.

What’s with the inferiority complex?

(3) James J. says:

Unfortunately, there has never been any conclusive proof of ANY other planet in this INFINITE universe with remotely near any kind of life sustaining environment such as earth…

The odds of our planet being at precisely the right distance, at precisely the right angle, with precisely the right orbit,

are in the multiple trillions to one…

no random “big bang” could have created these conditions…

I will concede that there may be ‘ultra terrestrials’ in a parallel dimension to our own, with which we catch a fleeting glimpse of from time to time….

but since they are not from our dimension, they neither sleep nor eat, nor do they need to breathe, because they are multi-dimensional entities, who do not dwell in the same time space continuum as we know it…

(4) furdburfull says:

If the x leader of the CIA Bush senior told President Clinton “it is on a need to know basis; and you don’t need to know”, what chance do you think the dullard president have?

July 27, 2009 at 11:19 am
(5) Augustus says:

It really amazes me how so many people can be privy to information that even U.S. presidents are not allowed to have!

Back to the topic at hand. The Press Secretary’s grin indicated to me that while he indeed takes government confidence extremely seriously, he simply does not believe that the government is actively hiding “The Truth about UFO’s”, from the public.

(6) ConspiraciesRUS says:

Sometimes Billy I think I’m the only one who reads the reports and watches the vids. People… the info is out there! And by there I am indicating THE INTERNET! Do yourselves a favor… google “youtube UFO disclosure” or simply go to the youtube site and start searching on any of the following names preceded by “UFO” – “Stanton Friedman”,
“Edgar Mitchell”, “Gordon Cooper”, “John Lear”, “Dr. Michael Wolf”, “Bob Lazar”, “Linda Moulton Howe”, “Billy Meier”, “George Adamski”, “Jacques Vallee”, “Allen Hynek”, “Clifford Stone” and yes even “Dan Aykroyd unplugged”. The question is not whether UFO’s exist it is whether we believe the present leadership will look into, and gain access of, “still classified” unreleased info and if said info will be sifted down.

As for what I believe Billy; another Dead End. That smug smirk gave him away.

(8) bc says:

First I must say that as far as laughing Gibbs is the biggest laugh around today! On the governments knowing. I saw a program on one of the networks years ago that stated the fire departments have a manual (everyone has it) that lists what to do if you come in contact with a UFO and/or allien.

(9) Teabone says:

Lets take the mystery out of the “What to do if you meet an alien” handbook, shall we?

Yes, it does exist. So does the one about what to do if the Vatican launches a missile attack on us.

When the sh*t hits the fan at 3:00AM on a Sunday morning, with something really weird and off the wall, like “aliens” it’s really convenient to have a “What to do first” plan already worked out for just that problem, don’t you think?.

You name it, they have a plan ready to deal with it. They call it “contingency planning”.

Half the Washington payroll works on this every day.

It does’t mean they really think it is even remotely possible, so don’t get all worked up over it.

(11) Gadrannanna says:

If governments do have information and opinions about ETs which are not already in the public domain then it would seem sensible for them to be careful about what they reveal.
With Chinese lanterns being capable, apparantly, of causing concern, worry and panic in members of the public one should be left wondering what sort of reaction there could be as a result of ET becoming an official fact.
I keep reading that, according to some people, the general public is ready for such revelations; I feel that this is, at best, a dubious assumption and that the matter of how people may react to disclosures should be discussed much more than it, so far, has been.
I am not, however, an advocate of a total embargo on information provision to the public. What would seem best is a gradual easing of the apparant conflict between government and many disclosure enthusiasts by means of a more honest and reconciliatory approach by the depths of government: they may not, as they claim, have any amazing proof of anything although they, perhaps, could be more honest about what they think about the ET issue as a whole.
A less confrontational, and better considered, approach by all parties may provide more results and sooner in the form of officialdom making some tentative announcements.
If governments feel that their backs are up against the wall then they may, understandably, remain in retreat.

(12) Augustus says:

There are laws protecting “Bigfoot”, some of the Lake Monsters like Nessie and other monsters. I suppose some of you would hand this up as proof of their existence?

July 28, 2009 at 3:20 pm
(13) James says:

Anyone can see that, apparently, this guy is a mind control slave-

Nobody wants to stick their necks out, understandably, because of the obvious repercussions from so-called MIBs…

July 28, 2009 at 3:43 pm
(14) Augustus says:

There are legitimate reasons for government secrecy, some of which may involve UFO’s, but that doesn’t mean there is any “space alien” connection. We are quite capable of producing our own UFO’s. We have been doing it for one and and half centuries. Anything that that flies and cannot be identified by the observer is by definition a UFO; also, any photographic evidence is suspect these days because any pic can be perfectly digitally altered or outright invented.

(15) Captain says:

Mikhal,I was wondering if your head has been up your butt for all or most of your life? My friend, you would quiver if you knew the many sophisticated and extraordinary weapons that the US government had. As far as mankind being less or more important than our space brothers, that was not the issue in the previous comment, it was about them being far more advanced and sophisticated than us dude.

July 28, 2009 at 4:54 pm
(16) Michael says:

The bottom line is: They DO exist. Countless pilots, astronauts, military personnel, and credible civilians have stated they have seen them. While there may be many people playing hoaxes with film and video, there are many genuine sightings caught on film. If one does his/her research, and looks at the body of evidence thus far gathered; it would be impossible to deny this very real phenomenon.

July 28, 2009 at 5:09 pm
(17) Augustus says:

Of course! And werewolves exist too! There were about 50,000 people executed in the 15th and 16th centuries in France and Germany for the crime of becoming werewolves. All these people were given trials according to due process and at least some of the witnesses , in most cases, had impeccable credentials. Ergot poisoning not withstanding. Proof positive of the existence of werewolves! Scientific IMPOSSIBILITY though, it remains!

Captain,

Publicly produce one of your “Space Brothers”, and definitely forever prove that Mikhal and not you has hid head up his ass!

(19) w. strieber says:

The problem with most people making comments here is that they lack experience.
Ive seen and done things that you people would not believe.
For those of you who think that sex with an alien would be a glorious new-agey experience, better think again.
No, it did not make me quantum leap into the next phase of human evolution.
It was rape, plain and simple.
Id like to tell you that it was a joyful and pleasant experience, but no, far from it.
The alien agenda does not include human rights, or human dignity, or any kind of humane treatment whatsoever.
Their message, which is echoed in their crop circles, is that they will do whatever they want to do to us, whenever they want to do it-

(20) Augustus says:

Dear w. strieber,

I’m probably every bit as much experienced as you are and you’re right! I don’t believe you!

(21) Augustus says:

Gadrannanna,

I just read your post me from a few days back. I can really appreciate your position and respect what your trying to do. I used to do a bit of that myself, and still do where I think appropriate, but I think don’t think this particular group needs any help stretching their imaginations.

July 29, 2009 at 7:00 am
(22) Gadrannanna says:

I see your point, Augustus! However, when people seem stuck in a rut of obsessive ridicularity, I do not see the harm in posting an alternative, if equally ridiculous, point of view. We all could benefit from a more balanced and open minded approach.
Leaving people to carry on as the victims of their own imagination is not necessarily the best idea and it is possible to fight imagination with imagination.
I hope that no one would miss an opportunity to criticise anything that I post or to suggest an alternative view!

(24) Augustus says:

Dear w. strieber,

I don’t need to prove anything. Your strong, overly emotional and illogical reaction to my saying, “I don’t believe you” only bears out the truth of my convictions.

July 29, 2009 at 1:34 pm
(25) Augustus says:

Gadrannanna,

Help me out a little here Doc. I fail to see where your method really accomplishes anything. People get stuck in their ruts usually for some good reason. Only when either their sense of danger is passed, or they have the time, energy, aptitude to do so, will they come out of their trenches, but they need a damn good reason for doing so; otherwise, they will not expend the necessary energy over time. Sometimes the end does not justify the means. Some people can operate fairly well in their rut., and for them to expend the necessary energy to get out of it may seem exorbitant. (1.) If you simply offer your audience equally ridiculous alternatives to their own, they will either (a.) see you as being ridiculous, which will not entice them, to alter their views, (b.) see your view as being equally valid, which for above mentioned reasons will not entice them to alter their views, or (c.) embrace your view as being the better viewpoint; however, since, as you say, your alternative is equally ridiculous, they merely swap one trench for another one. No progress is made. (2.) If, on the other hand, you give them a mirror of their behavior which anybody can see as being ridiculous and declare it to be so yourself, they may then start to question themselves, and make more progress in their thought life. I think this is preferable since no one has the wisdom to tell another what to think.

July 29, 2009 at 2:24 pm
(26) Gadrannanna says:

Well, if someone is that stubborn (not you) then no strategy will cause them to be open to alternatives. Ridiculous, sarcastic, compassionate, polite, psychiatric, grounded in mainstream science; none of these methods are guaranteed to get someone out of a rut.
It’s not about telling someone what to think. I simply believe that we could all benefit from being more open minded.
You could say that people have the right to not be open minded. Fine, but I will still prefer open as opposed to closed.

July 29, 2009 at 3:04 pm
(27) Gadrannanna says:

By the way, I have my own ruts (ridiculous or otherwise). However, I attempt to see that I might be barking up the wrong tree and, in the case of a mystery I may be willing to entertain a contrary point of view without changing my mind. Maybe I will change my mind later, maybe not.

July 29, 2009 at 3:48 pm
(28) Augustus says:

Gadrannanna,

To think is to be open minded. Like you, I am in favor of it, and always encourage it in others, where possible. Of course, there is some point on any topic where one has enough information to form some general conclusions, as you say. [No offense intended in my earlier post. I didn't mean to imply that you were trying to impose your thoughts on others, I was just questioning your method of getting people to think for themselves. (I'm trying to brush up my almost non-existent social skills! lol)]

July 29, 2009 at 4:22 pm
(29) Gadrannanna says:

In my experience, at least, in getting people to think for themselves I have been, at times, surprised by what works. The logic of the human psyche can be a very strange thing, I find.
I do appreciate the points you have made. I shall attempt to bear them in mind.

July 29, 2009 at 5:26 pm
(30) Augustus says:

Gadrannanna,

Thank you! I take that as a great compliment. I wasn’t really looking for one, so that makes it all the better! I’m all about the human soul (psyche), and always have been. With the exception of a few pets I’ve had in my live, I really know no other (non-human, that is!) Of course, studying neurological development with the aid of electronics is really the key these days. I imagine eventually, everybody will go to a Neurologist, get plugged into a machine, and get instantly cured from all their psychoses, neuroses, complexes, superstitions, mental blocks, and other mental-emotional hangs-ups. LOL

(31) Nightstalker1158 says:

It seems to me that if these so called experienced people would get off there behinds and stop playing on the computer, maybe something would be done. Unfortunatly this country lacks in people who will stand up and actually do anything. They are too busy either surfing the web and hiding behind their monitore or sitting in front of their televisions barking out their comments like they are answering the twenty thousand dollar question on Jeapordy. Wake up everyone, if it isn’t a little green man or a political group that takes us over, it will be someone else. Someone ones said, “Can’t we all just get along”? Just imagine what we could do if we all worked together as a team to either prove or disprove anything. I myself have an open mind and beleive in the possability there may be something visiting us but unfortunatly there are too many fools out there that would rather video tape a doll on an autopsy table or sit at his desk and type nasty words to someone who says they beleive. To those who are so negative, I hope they probe your behinds first.

Gadrannanna:

You’re a good referee. Do you get paid for this?

July 31, 2009 at 6:08 am
(35) Gadrannanna says:

Sincere thanks for the compliment. In a sense, I do get paid because I am in receipt of Government benefits. I am on the sick long term and I am trying not to treat the situation like a holiday or early retirement.
I feel that, in refereeing as you call it, I am at risk of seeming aloof and/or patronising but that is definitely not my intention and neither is it how I feel.
I’m just trying to do something slightly joblike without making it too noticeable.
I shall carry on with it until such time as I receive official complaint!!!!!
By the way, if we really have got a USAF employee amongst us that can only be a good thing, Guido.
