Flying Through the News

By , About.com GuideAugust 21, 2009

Follow me on:

An unknown object that flew through a shot of a newcast on BBC News has caused quite a stir. While broadcasting BBC Breakfast television, television viewers were stunned to see the object moving through the scene.

The appearance of the UFO was called "intriguing," and a "genuine mystery." A web cam picked up the unknown flying object moving over the Gateshead Millennium Bridge on the River Tyne.

Former Mod UFO veteran Nick Pope said: "At first I thought it was a bird, but the slowed down footage seems to rule this out. It's an intriguing film and a genuine mystery."

See for yourself at UFO Invades BBC Breakfast, and tell us what you think the object was.

my first guess is either its a:

1. sparrow
2. beetle
3. rod
4. alien probe

i dunno but the rod thing had been debunked to death…

ill go with #3…
these things are all around us, albeit they live on a higher dimensional frequency than we do…

our minds filter them out, but digital technology does not…

As usual – poor image quality showing “something” – made unidentifiable by… the poor image quality.

Could be: a flying insect passing close to the camera lens.

I notice Late Nite Lisa says the “rods” phenomenon has been debunked. I do not follow these things very closely, so I may not have caught anything about debunking the rods phenomenon.

I also notice that a post on the UK site says that this is “proven” (in previous examples) to be a flaw in digital video. Have not seen any reports which make this claim, either.
I rather doubt this is true: after all, the BBC originated this video and they should have experts on such flaws readily available to comment.

I take a lot of video – just as a hobbyist. I haven’t seen anything like this in any video I’ve taken. None of my friends who take video has seen or reported this kind of “event” either. It seems like someone (amateur videographers) would have tried to duplicate such “objects” just out of curiosity.

The Rods were debunked on The History Channel’s “Monster Quest” . The are just insects or birds which are flying to fast or to close that the video camera can’t focus on it . This was proven by using a normal video camera and a high speed camera at the same time. The normal camera captured a rod but, the high speed showed it was a moth.

Well “4Truth” I believe you are correct in that the object could be an insect passing close to the camera lens or as the few others suggest a rod. I believe Late Night Lisa was referring to debunking such as the experiment performed on Monster Quest. If you Google “Youtube”, “Monster Quest”, and “Mysterious Flying Creatures” I’m sure you will find the episode. But even Monster Quest’s integrity should be questioned. For more info you can click my name. I’ve imbedded the URL for more information on that episode.

(10) D. Akroyd says:

well,

id say that 90 % of the rods captured on film are insects.
im sorry, that just my personal opinion.
HOWEVER that leaves 10% which cannot be explained…

Akroyd:

What you say is true for ANY event. Humans are not 100% accurate observers of anything., and no matter how smart we think we are, this is also the very reason we will NEVER be able to gain 100% knowledge of anything we study. This does not point to some bizarre quirkiness of nature or even some kind of government plot. It is just what is often referred to as being part of the human condition.

It is sad that many people cannot seem to get it into their thick skulls that not being able to explain something to the nth degree or at times at all, is due to this. Believing all reports to be mostly accurate, and themselves as infallible, they set themselves up for paranoid delusions, which can at times, even result in total psychosis. This is an unhealthy state of affairs which affect us all, one way or another.

Really, I think most people are not lying about what they see and are being as completely honest as possible, in that people really report what they think they see, it’s just their conclusions are wrong, which leads to mistaken reporting, for example:
- a tarp covered jet fighter on a flatbed could look like a disk, regardless of some claims, especially from certain angles, and be reported as such.

This makes third person investigation, such as we are attempting to do here, all the harder, and has caused many very wise people to lament about language being a very poor means of communication.

(I think this is why Douglas Addams had Slartybartfast make a general dismissing remark concerning Arthur Dent’s feelings of general paranoia, in ” A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.)
