Voyager 2 Sending Back Undecipherable Signals

By May 17, 2010

Follow me on:

It was 1977 that the Voyager 2 spacecraft, loaded with music, pictures, and 55 languages of greetings was launched to probe the Universe. The multiple language format was used just in case an intelligent life found it.

The craft has had an amazing journey to the far reaches of our solar system, but on April 22, its signal, which takes 13 hours to reach back to Earth, abruptly changed.

The signal is like electronic gibberish, and no scientific data has been received. Hartwig Hausdorf, considered an expert, stated: "It seems almost as if someone had reprogrammed or hijacked the probe - thus perhaps we do not yet know the whole truth..."

What do you think this could be? Simply a failure after 33 years, or something more sinister? Weigh in with your comments...

This is quite a mystery, maybe they will get it working correctly soon, but wouldn’t that be an expensive service call?

(2) PhilB says:

So if we got hold of a wayward probe that was transmitting jiburish in an unfamiliar format. Would we mess with it to try and make some sense of it? Sure we would. And so would someone else out there. Perhaps figuring out that a change in the signal would alert the sender that it has found something.
NASA would do anything as simple as place a two way radio in the space craft with visual instructions on how to call home. A picture phone would really be cool. Does the probe even transmit pictures if it is tampered with?? That would be too easy.

(3) PhilB says:

Didn’t they already do this in Star Trek, remember “Veeger” the lost probe that merged with an alien lost probe.

(5) Mars Rover says:

The thing is 33 years old running on Atari 2600 technology! It’s freezing out there! I’m surprized it’s worked as long as it has in the first place.

But that would be awesome wouldn’t it? Aliens finding the thing with all the messages in it. If I remember right, NASA also put our location in there, so we may be getting visitors very soon if it’s been hijacked!

33 years and a road map maybe they have already found us!

That would be awesome Littlepinky. But if I had to place a bet, I’d put my money on it breaking down instead… :(

(8) Kevin says:

I think the likelyhood that an alien tampered with it and it still transmitting data is remote. I’m pretty sure it has to be pointed toward earth for us to receive it so that’s not very likely. A small meteor hit in the right spot might do it though!

(9) Arlene says:

Maybe it’s a commercial for a good burger joint near Jupiter, or a Spacebook “Friend” request?

May 17, 2010 at 12:35 pm
(10) Scott says:

Billy, it’s obvious what has happened. Aliens have abducted the Voyager, reprogrammed it and it’s now emitting cryptic alien messages. Trying to test us into decoding it’s sinister message. Aliens won’t communicate with us directly, because they feel so superior…
Or maybe Voyager’s software is just shot after 33 years and millions of miles.

i agree that its basically an atari 2600 in a satelite…
and ya know, someone needs to push the reset button on it! lol!

how do we know that the russians or chinese didnt hack into it?

i mean, i have a friend who im sure has that capability! ;)

A 33 year old atari??? Only time will tell but by the time we know, who or what will be alive to give a crap?

ummm, maybe cause it’s 33 YEARS OLD??? HELLO??
but then again, who really knows? WHO REALLY KNOWS?? The Shaw Knows …… muahahahahahaaaa

I read this on “our Strange World” and the article said they thought it was transmission failure and not alien contact. but it would be fun (0r scary) if it really was alien contact.

(19) Arlene says:

As of last night Jet Propulsion Laboratory diagnosed what has happened on board Voyager 2. See the link below. A bit of the memory on board of Voyager 2 flipped.

Well, suppose that just about sums it up.

May 18, 2010 at 1:12 pm
(21) skeptikal1 says:

I think it’s pretty obvious that Voyager was probe-jacked by some gangsta martians. They’ll probably use it to knock off a few liquor stores and then do a drive by on Saturn.
It’s well known that Mars is a Blood planet, while Saturn is Cryp territory.

Can’t we all just get along?

May 18, 2010 at 2:20 pm
(22) Phil says:

It’s most likely a malfunction or interference. I’m sure there is some sort of life out there somewhere, we can’t be the only little grain of sand with life but if there is life more intelligent than us and close enough I’m sure we would have had better proof by now. but who knows.

May 18, 2010 at 2:44 pm

OMG! Skeptikal1 was right! I just got a picture of them flying by Mars!

(25) Snaggletooth says:

Aliens ?
Are they real ? Sure there real. A lot of people have there own ideas about aliens. From where to what they look like to why there here. Reputable people thru out history have recorded encounters. Alexander, columbus, astronauts, presidents and on and on. Why would they want to make direct contact with us ? From alexanders time we have been aggressively persueing and fireing on them for invading human air space, air force’s around the world. And a technology thousands of years advanced at that. I don’t think they like mankind and logic dictates that to be self evident. I think the Phoenix lights was a message, a show of power made evident to over 10,000 people ending at Luke air base
saying they do not like the human race. That was one large anti-gravity space ship. So why would they won’t to communicate with us thru a little piece of space junk.

(26) Chris says:

I doubt that we are all by ourselves in the universe, and feel that if there is life out there, chances are they know about us already. We have only been envolved in space exploration for a mere 50 or so years and are at the edge of our solar system. If there is other intellegent life out there even exploring space for 100 years or even 1000 years, imagine the difference. To think this thing has been stolen and reprogrammed is a little far fetched, but not impossible. My question is why would we give our location out to strangers? That is like sending your child to an unknown neighborhood with your address saying, “hey, we have valuable supplies and shelter, come get it”. Granted, a nice stranger looking for friends may find it. But a hungry family that has nothing left may also find it.

(27) Gadrannanna says:

The news at the JPL website does not allow anyone to conclude that there was no deliberate reprogramming involved in order to produce the fault. If JPL can flip a bit then so could someone else.

(30) BlueBookJim says:

RE: Voyager 2 spacecraft. What has been surmised to be “electronic gibberish” could be a language we have not yet translated. Yes, it could be re-programming but with the intent to communicate rather than to interfere. It deserves a second look with this in mind.

May 24, 2010 at 6:57 pm
(31) Barb says:

I don’t think that we will really actually know. But who knows – the probe could have been tampered with. But then again, it has been 33 years. Or could it be possible that the probe could have been hit by a meteor? However, if something like pictures could be sent back, that would be a lot of help.

(34) Curt B. says:

I remember when they sent Voyager out there with that info on it for “anyone” (out there) to see. I wondered WHY we’d offer a “road map” back to Earth!!! If the wrong aliens find it…..we could be in BIG trouble. If you think Criagslist can be dangerous……think about Voyager out there giving instructions to “our earthly house”!!!

May 25, 2010 at 12:00 am
(35) Michael says:

Possibly an atmospheric change or disturbance to the electronic equipment. Or transmissions (communication) sent to the device which is only sending that transmission to us.

May 25, 2010 at 12:23 am
(36) Bruce says:

Martin is on to something about the Duracell battery. If you were an alien, what would you think of a messenger from earth arriving with a dead pink bunny with a drum inside? I think they’ll flee becase we, “the fleas”, are now known to be loose in this part of the galaxy. I understand quasars are the alien’s after-burners.

(39) Sam B says:

Employing Occam’s razor in the absence of any hard evidence of any kind, my feeling is that some IC or other piece of hardware finally went bye-bye. We’re talking about chips that were manufactured when 8 bits was the length of a machine instruction and 4K memory was a LOT. Think IMSAI, Altair and 8008 processors.

The mere fact that a 33 year old electronic gadget, which has been in the harshest of environments for virtually all of that time, can still operate at all is almost beyond belief. Your average car these days has way more processing power under the hood – and also think about how long the average Engine Control Module lasts. It’s not going to be anywhere near 30 years. Trying to extract from this event some indication that Voyager has been intercepted by aliens and its little brain re-programmed is the wildest kind of speculation.

Oh, and about “Veeger” from “Star Trek: The Motionless Picture”. Warmed-over and stretched-out rehash of “Nomad” from TOS. I had really hoped for MUCH better when I saw the movie, although “The Wrath of Khan” more than made up for the failings of its predecessor.

ok listen if you guys dont think that all of those possible ufo sighting arnt true…..what am i kidding there not such thing as possibly when your speaking of ufos anyway if they have been spying on us then we decided to launch a vehicle into space then ya of course sooner or later they will find it take it and investigate it and most astronmers say that were not the only kind in the universe but quote”space the final frontier”ya it is the final frontier but not only for us.a million bucks say that their tech is way more advanced than us and if people keep reporting ufo sightings then hell ya there more advanced and they showed up way earlier than when we showed up on earth and that answers it either thy have bigger brains than us or they showed up earlier all its gonna take is for our tech to be powerful enough to shot them down and a countries militia sights them with radar or a jet and the jets prosue and take em out or a million bombs do good-BYE
