Montoya was obviously shaken, and frightened. What had he seen that could have frightened him so badly? In later statements, Pete Anaya would relate what he recalled about the experience. He stated that Montoya was asked by his brother if he wanted to be taken to his usual place of residence while in Roswell, the Nickson Hotel. Montoya said that he wanted to go to Ruben's house instead, saying he was in need of a drink. Obviously in a near state of shock as they proceeded to the Anaya house, Ruben recalled that Montoya kept saying:

"They weren't human! They weren't human!"

As they continued their trip back to Ruben Anaya's house, Montoya's excitement and fear was replaced with a quiet, solemn demeanor, as he quietly stared out the window of the car. When they reached the house, he went inside, collapsed on the couch, and was handed a glass of scotch. The scotch seemed to have little effect, so he was handed a bottle of Jim Beam whiskey. Although it was 3/4 full, he downed it straight from the bottle in 3 big drinks.

The men tried to calm the lieutenant governor down, and exhorted him to relax, but Montoya excitedly told them they would never believe what he had seen at Hangar P-3. According to testimony of Ruben Anaya, Montoya began to describe his haunting experience. As was normal with him, when he became excited, he often spoke in Spanish.

"We don't know what it is. There was a flying saucer. They say it moves like a platter... a plane without wings. Not a helicopter."

"un plato muy grande con una machina en la media," he said, which translated means, "a big saucer with a machine in the middle."

"I don't know where it's from. It could be from the moon. We don't know what it is."

It is probable that Montoya was relating information told to him by military personnel returning from the crash sites. This is plausible, because at this time, only bits and pieces of the craft were being brought to the hangar, and Montoya would later describe seeing parts of a craft, not an intact craft. If what he had already told the four men wasn't enough to astonish and frighten them, there was more to his story... a lot more.

He began to describe "four little men." He related how small they were, and he had one more shocking statement: one of the aliens was still alive! There is some disagreement as to how many alien beings Montoya saw, but the consensus of eyewitness statements point to four aliens, three dead, and one alive. Montoya stood up in an attempt to demonstrate the size of the aliens. He pointed to his chest, and said they only came up to that point of his body. Montoya was not a tall man himself, which would indicate that the aliens were about 3 1/2 feet tall.

He further described the aliens as being skinny and having big, teardrop-shaped eyes. Their mouths were nothing more than slits in their faces, and they had large, bald heads. He attempted to describe the excited activity inside the hangar. The four small beings were laying on a table, which has been borrowed from a mess hall. Montoya deduced that one of the four aliens still clung to life because he could hear it moaning.

The little being was moving his knees on the table, and one of his hands could be seen to move. Montoya could not get as close to the beings as he would have liked because of the press of doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel attending to the aliens.

He was able to see that the beings had pale, white skin, with no hair. He described them as not human because of their diminutive stature. The beings were wearing what he described as a "flight suit," silver in color, and tight fitting. He recalled that the aliens had four fingers on each hand. Their fingers were long and thin.

Montoya also said that just before the rescue car showed up for him, he saw the beings being transported to the base hospital. Although he was showered with questions during his description, he finally ended his story by saying:

"I tell you, they're not from this world."
