Introduction - Vermont and UFOs

I received a very interesting email from one of our readers. He wanted to relate an incident that occurred in Windsor, Vermont c. 1968. Here is what he says:

I just read your account regarding the 1968 UFO at Buff Ledge, on Lake Champlain in Vermont. Curiously I have never heard of this particular incident.

Here is an excerpt from this riveting case:

"Now, the three UFOs moved ever closer to to two friends, Michael and Janet. The UFOs formed a triangle formation, and then two of them pulled away, leaving just one out front. Later, the male witness would recall hearing something that sounded like "a thousand tuning forks" as the two objects pulled back. The last UFO then passed right over the two witnesses, shot upward and briefly disappeared. Soon, it would reappear, tilted to one side, then drop straight into the lake.

"After a time, it would emerge from the lake, and then begin moving directly toward Michael and Janet. The UFO was so close now that two beings could be seen through the transparent cupola of the object. The beings appeared child-like. According to Michael, their necks were elongated, they had big heads for their body size. They had no hair, but large eyes which wrapped around the side of their heads. He thought that he was in mental contact with the beings."

Editor's Note: It is true that many UFO students have not heard of the Buff Ledge case, and there is a good reason for that. It was included in a little known book, 'Encounter at Buff Ledge: A UFO Case History' by Walter N. Webb, published in 1993.

The Internet was just a babe then, with information being fairly sparse and not available in many parts of the country, and UFO books were pretty much relegated to drug store paperbacks.

Webb was the Astronomy consultant of four UFO investigation associations, a member of MUFON and CUFOS, and a UFO witness himself in 1951. He was the first investigator of the Betty and Barney Hill sighting, among others.

He found out that among the clutter of UFO sighting reports caused by common-place phenomena, there exists a core of manifestation that are totally unique, and that very strong circumstantial evidence points at extraterrestrial visits as their cause.

Now, back to our reader's report.

It Happened in Windsor

I will relate another strange event that happened around the same time. I was about 13 years old and lived in Windsor, Vermont with Mt. Ascutney so close by, a number of us spent every spare winter minute skiing there.

Back in those days there was one very old, slow main chairlift and a new shorter one. The rope tows had been removed and there were three T-bar lifts.

It was a small ski area that presented challenges that experts from the world over traveled to.

Flying Saucer Glinting in the Sun

I was riding the main chairlift with another boy my age. The weather was clear as could be and when we were about 1/4 of the way up, we both saw a flying saucer glinting in the sun.

It was dead ahead of us and hovering high in the sky. We both remarked about it. Out of nowhere a fighter jet appeared and gave chase. The object took off like a shot and then stopped.

The jet approached and was joined by another jet. They were chasing this thing all over, but it kept making instant 90 degree turns and was clearly engaged in a "cat and mouse" game.

The Saucer Prevails

Finally the saucer shot off so fast we could barely see it go, and that was that. We couldn't believe it. Neither did our parents or anyone else we told.

I have rarely mentioned it again over these last 40 plus years. I am guessing the jets were scrambled from Pease AFB or maybe Hansom.

There are two other local incidents I know of if you have any interest. I prefer not to identify myself even at this late date.

Best Regards
