The object I saw came from the east sky; moving west. It moved on a horizontal plane making no noise; we estimated it to be around 10 miles up. It appeared to be rectangular in shape with both ends having a round hatch-like opening.
It was like you could partially see right through the object and it was 3-dimensional, you could see it had a front and bottom and 4 sides.
The front of it looked like fire shooting out of it; and running down the sides of it. The entire object was glowing a yellow-red hue, very brightly. At first we thought it was an air balloon on fire, but it kept a straight course.
Then it slowed down, but then speed back up and took off to the west; almost as if it was looking at us. There were four of us outside; one seeing it first and pointing it out to the others.

I was sitting on my front porch. I noticed, coming from the south at a high altitude, a glowing light, as if it was a flame, not an aircraft. It was moving quickly, but not a very high altitude. My estimate is about 10 - 15,000 feet.
It was moving quickly, as a plane at about 35,000+ would move. As it got closer, it was moving directly at me, south to north, and appeared to be a hot-air balloon, but moving way too fast for that. As it moved overhead, it was silent, and it looked like a balloon with a flame under it, but very high.
I took two pictures with my iPhone, both showed a cigar or banana-shaped flame/fire when I looked at it close up. As I went through my house to call my wife and look at it out the back (north side), it was no longer bright. It's as if the lights/flame had gone out, but you could still see its dark shape against the sky.
My wife said that it looked like a cigar to her. It did to me at that time, as well. It was still moving very quickly and faded away as it moved north. Being a flight/plane enthusiast, I immediately looked at flight traffic over my area on flightaware.com.
For the first time ever, it was blank. No flight traffic showed up on either Midway or O'Hare airport's radar screen. Now, I have been viewing flightaware.com air traffic for a long time and I have never had a blank screen.
Also, all flight traffic from Midway Airport, which had been flying over my house on approach to the airport at the time of the sighting, just stopped. It ended very quickly. No more jets; very strange. During this entire episode, there was no sound associated with the object at all.

I walked outside to take a quick peek at the sky hoping for the chance of a few meteors. My daughter missed the one two nights before. A red blinking light caught my attention as it was ascending upward in the sky.
At this point I called my boyfriend outside. There is a tree in the middle of our backyard that sits in front of the door; so naturally he looked upward and started laughing at me.
There was an airplane headed over our house traveling west to east. I told him "NO," it was that way (in which the tree was blocking). We went down the yard past the tree and saw that it was a large red light with smaller white lights.
It was traveling north at almost a 90 degree angle and headed south. It was silent and traveled faster than any other aircraft I have ever seen.
It was flying much lower than a typical aircraft would. I was so shocked and amazed watching it that I didn't even see where the other two aircraft came from, but one came from each side and joined the one I was watching.
They were flying in a V-formation and continued to go south. Then at what I would estimate being about 10 miles away, they hovered in the same spot and position for about 7 minutes, at which point I went inside.
