Four of us were there and someone thought it looked like a balloon. This seemed inconsistent as to the way it was traveling, in my opinion.
The UFO was about 100 - 150 yards above our heads traveling due north in a straight and steady pace.
It was traveling at 20-30 mph. I would say it resembled a Chinese lantern in terms of the glowing, soft light.
It appeared smooth in texture. I watched it travel until I couldn't see it anymore, and when I was losing sight of it, the sky had a glitter effect where I thought the object should have been in the distance.
I was very impressed and curious about the sighting, whereas my friends just sort of dismissed the event.
Illinois - 05-23-11 - I was leaving my fiancé's house around 11:30 PM. His house is essentially in the middle of nowhere and is surrounded by corn fields.
On a clear night, you can see every star in the pitch black sky, as it is void of air pollution and smog.
Tonight, however, we were expecting serious storm systems so the sky was extremely cloudy and overcast, and dark grey clouds blocked any stars or airplanes in the sky.
However, looking to the eastern part of the sky, I noticed a vibrantly glowing orange light hovering in the air.
Having an avid interest in UFOs, I pointed it out to my fiancé, asking him if there was a streetlight or radio tower in that area.
He quickly brushed off these possibilities, as his house is surrounded by farmland as I mentioned.
We stood staring at the UFO. It hung stationary in the sky, glowing a bright orange. It didn't waver like an airplane- in fact, it didn't move whatsoever.
The object was VERY still.
It seemed to flash a little bit of red in the lower right corner. For the most part, it was entirely orange - a very vibrant orange.
The UFO captivated us since it stood out so sharply against the cloud-covered sky. I cannot emphasize this enough.
I took careful note on my drive home - I couldn't even see any airplanes against the heavy cloud coverage.
Illinois - 05-27-11 - I saw two other MUFON reports of something similar in the Chicago area recently, so I will try and share what I saw on this site.
I have seen this gold, copper, orange sphere UFO several times during the day over the past month; 4/29, 5/22, and again yesterday May 27,2011, at 3:15 PM CDT.
I have also recorded this type of craft a few times before since 2009. I watched the slow moving, sparkling, gold morphing sphere of light noiselessly glide over the city for about 4 minutes.
My camcorder is brand new HD Sony, but for some reason when I tried focusing in on the object, the screen blurred or possibly the object was disappearing and reappearing.
It started as a small point of light, it was east over the city then came west towards Forest Park.
Maybe this is what the other witnesses saw.Illinois - 05-28-11 - I was driving to a food center on Waukegan and Deerfield Rd, and I noticed these two strange red lights in the sky. They did not exhibit strobe patterns like your typical airplane at night.
When I finally arrived at the food center and walked outside the lot, I noticed more of the same objects coming from one particular area, and that was in the direction of Lake Michigan.
Some of them were bright, solid red or yellow and they were consistently lit.
