Original E.T. Script Altered

I'm sure all of you have seen the movie E.T., the tale of the lovable, yet ugly alien that came to earth. Just recently, producer Steven Spielberg made a very interesting admission to Entertainment Weekly about the classic film.

At first, the warm-hearted tale was quite a bit darker; it was supposed to be about a terrifying night of alien visitation to a small farm in Kelly, Kentucky.

Spielberg had other ideas; he was able to talk writer Melissa Mathison into lightening up the script and creating the E.T. character. At that time, Mathison was girlfriend to Harrison Ford.

Obviously, the right script was used. The case that the original script was based on was the The Kelly Kentucky Aliens.

In the story it says that the alien was walking up to their house with its hands raised, so I don’t understand why the men starting shooting at it in the first place?

The reason that the government men started shooting is because there has been an international resolution from the UN that any alien must be shot on sight. Strange that governments will deny their existance and then pass international laws regarding them? Only England and the US have been said to have regular contact with alien groups at secret military bases. But not every alien species is friendly. But that can be said about humans as well.

Listening to you two reminds me of TV preachers trying to make a Jewish history book sound like the mystical word of God.

@PhilB – I think he was asking why the family involved in the Kelly incident started firing at the first “being” that was approaching the house with its hands raised.

I think the Hopkinsville case would make a pretty decent movie, if someone could find a way to draw it out to ninety minutes and pen a decent ending to it.

ET is the most overrated movie in history. I watched it a few times and it’s so sickening sweetly melodramtic that I can’t stay in the room with it. It just gets on my nerves. I think it was made for children. I thought Close Encounters was a much better movie although it too had problems with being too melodramatic at times. Speilberg, who maybe the most overrated movie director, should have used the original script.

I should clarify that Speilberg is still a great director, but I think he’s overrated on his fantasy films because he over uses melodrama. Between the music and the Choreography he tries to pound emotion into us instead of letting the viewer choose to like a particular scene. Some of his movies, Gremlins and Super8, were disappointing. The movies that fail he drops his names as director sometimes he takes more than his fair share of credit for the ones that do well. I haven’t seen Shindlers list or saving private ryan which I hear are pretty good. So he’s excellent but still overrated.

@Scott, what movies has Spielberg dropped his name from? He didn’t direct Gremlins or Super 8, ET was a children’s movie (hence the PG rating) and it was hardly “the most overrated movie in history”. Lastly, isn’t everybody in Hollywood overrated for what they do? Spielberg has directed some very good movies and produced even more but nobody hits 1000 and no one movie pleases everyone.

If Spielberg is such a genius why was he conned by Bernie Maddow?

Mr. King, I can only assume you meant to say that the genius was duped by Bernard Madoff as were countless others, correct?
