Mass Sighting in United Kingdom, 1993

By , About.com Guide

One of the most compelling cases of multiple UFO sightings comes to us from the United Kingdom. These sightings occurred on basically two nights, March 30 and 31, 1993. In total, there were over 200 reports made by anxious citizens, with many of the reporters being policemen.

The policemen reports naturally are given greater credibility, being from trained observers. The majority of these were made in the southwest part of the country, in Devon and Cornwall. In many of the reports, the phrase, "... like nothing I have ever seen before" was used. There were, of course, many reports of the familiar, "lights in the sky."

More than not, witnesses reported two lights, with a third fainter light, flying in unison... in other words a triangle UFO. There is always the possibility that the three-light configuration could have been three separate UFOs, but for the most part, witness reports described the three objects moving in such unison, that it was surmised the objects were in fact one triangular-shaped UFO.

The most compelling of these sightings were those in which the UFO was observed at close range, often times slowly moving over tree tops, houses, and buildings. A family in Staffordshire made a fascinating report of a triangle or V-shaped UFO flying so low, that they jumped up to try to touch it. In a matter of minutes, they saw the object appear to land in a nearby field. They also described a "low, humming sound, a very low-frequency sound." The family stated that you could not really hear the sound as much as you could "feel" it.

Whatever this strange, unknown object was, it was interested in military installations, as it visited at least two, according to official records.

The guard patrol at RAF Cosford reported seeing the object fly over the base. This was reported by at least three personnel. The incident was immediately reported to headquarters. Radar operators reported nothing unusual on their screens, however, and there was no scheduled traffic at or near the time of the base sightings.

The Cosford report was forwarded to RAF Shawbury, which was only 12 miles from Cosford. The call was taken by the meteorological officer, a man with eight years of experience in his field. As he checked the night sky, he was amazed to see a distant light. As he watched, it soon became a solid, structured craft that flew directly over Shawbury. He approximated the object's altitude at no more than 200 feet. He could also hear a "low, humming sound." He was amazed when he saw the object shoot down a light beam several times in an adjacent field. Soon, the beam was retracted, and the object began to gain altitude, and suddenly shot off in a heartbeat.

The incident was investigated by heralded researcher, Nick Pope, who investigated UFO reports for the British Ministry of Defence. After an exhaustive investigation, the only thing that even remotely could be construed as a UFO was a rocket reentry. This would have caused a brief display like that of fireworks, and of course, could not begin to explain the low flying triangle craft seen and reported by many residents, policemen, and military personnel. There has been no reasonable explanation for the sightings in the United Kingdom in late March of 1993.
